Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you’re brand new to singing or just curious about how lessons work, here are some of the questions I get asked the most. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, just drop me a message — I’m always happy to help!
What styles of singing do you teach?
My speciality is musical theatre, as this is the area I trained in and continue to be most passionate about. That said, I work with students across a wide range of genres, including pop, country, jazz, and more. Whatever your style or goals, lessons are tailored to suit your voice and musical interests.
Do I have to sing in front of other people?
Not at all. Lessons are one-to-one, just between you and me, so you can feel completely comfortable and supported. If you ever want to have someone join a lesson – for moral support or to share your progress – we can definitely discuss that in advance.
Can I take lessons just for fun, without performing?
Absolutely! Singing should be enjoyable, and there’s no pressure to perform if that’s not your goal. Many of my students take lessons simply to build confidence, sing for personal enjoyment, or even just to belt it out in the car! Whatever your reason, lessons are all about doing what you love and having fun along the way.
Can I record my lessons to practice later?
Yes, if you’d like to record your lesson, just let me know in advance and we can arrange it. Recording can be a great tool for tracking your progress and helping you practice at home, especially as we often cover a lot of techniques and tips during a session. It’s also useful to hear how you sound before and after working on a song – so you can really notice the difference!
Can you help with confidence or stage fright?
Yes – building confidence is something I work on with all my students. I believe that with the right tools, techniques, and support, anyone can learn to trust in their voice and themselves. Confidence often grows naturally when we feel prepared and understood. I’m a big believer that stage fright is often just a sign that we need a little encouragement and a fresh perspective – and that’s exactly what I’m here to provide.
Do I need to know how to read music?
Not at all. You don’t need to read music to enjoy or benefit from singing lessons. We can work with backing tracks, which I’m happy to prepare ahead of the lesson if we’ve discussed your song choice. That said, I often use sheet music, alongside the backing tracks, during lessons to help you become familiar with it. This can be a great way to start learning the basics of music reading – if that’s something you’re interested in – or simply to support your overall musical development.
Can you help me prepare for an audition or performance?
Definitely. I have personal experience with both professional auditions and local productions, and I regularly support students in preparing for their own performances. Once you share the details of your audition or event, we’ll plan your lessons around it – focusing on learning your song, refining your technique, building confidence in your performance, and addressing anything else you might need to feel fully prepared and at your best.
Is there a cancellation policy?
Yes. I completely understand that unexpected things can come up, and I always aim to be flexible. However, as a self-employed teacher, I kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a lesson.
If a cancellation is made with less than 24 hours’ notice and I’m unable to fill the slot, the lesson may still need to be paid for. Of course, exceptions will be made for genuine emergencies; just keep me informed, and we’ll work it out together. Are there any contracts or long-term commitments?
Not at all! Some students prefer to commit to long-term lessons, which is great if you’re looking for ongoing development. But many also choose to take lessons month-by-month, with no pressure to commit long-term. I also welcome students who want just a set number of lessons to focus on specific goals, such as auditions or particular skills. The choice is entirely yours!
Do you teach children as well as adults?
Yes! I teach students of all ages, tailoring lessons to suit both age and ability. I work with children and young adults privately and at Centre Arts LTD, Elite Dance Company and Kent Music, where I focus on developing strong, healthy singing habits in a fun and supportive environment. Starting young is a great way to build solid foundations, but I firmly believe it’s never too late to begin singing lessons and develop your voice at any stage of life.
